​Today, we shine the spotlight on A'ja Wilson, a remarkable athlete who has made significant waves in the world of basketball. From humble beginnings in South Carolina to WNBA stardom, let's learn more about the star power forward for the Las Vegas Aces. 

Early Life and Background

​A'ja Wilson, born on August 8, 1996, in Columbia, South Carolina, grew up with a love for basketball ingrained in her DNA. Her unique name was inspired by her father's favorite song, titled "Aja" by Steely Dan. From a young age, she showed immense potential and a natural talent for the game. As a teenager, A'ja attended Heathwood Hall Episcopal School, where she quickly became a standout player, drawing attention from college recruiters across the nation.

Rising to Prominence

​A'ja's undeniable talent and exceptional skills propelled her into the national spotlight during her high school years. In fact, she was named the 2014 National High School Player of the Year after averaging 35 points, 15 rebounds, and 5 blocks game, leading Heathwood Hall to a state championship. Her dominance on the court caught the attention of top-tier college programs, and she ultimately committed to play for the University of South Carolina Gamecocks. Under the guidance of renowned coach Dawn Staley, A'ja's abilities flourished, and she became a force to be reckoned with in collegiate basketball.

Collegiate Success

​During her time at the University of South Carolina, A'ja Wilson etched her name in the annals of basketball history. Standing at an impressive height of 6 feet 5 inches (1.96 meters), her towering presence posed a challenge for opponents. The left-hander's skill set extended beyond her height, as she showcased remarkable agility, scoring ability, and defensive prowess. For comparison purposes, the average player height in the WNBA is 6'0" (the NBA is 6'7"). 

During her sophomore year, A'ja Wilson helped lead the Gamecocks to their first NCAA Women's Basketball Championship in 2017. Her outstanding performance and contributions earned her numerous accolades, including the prestigious Naismith College Player of the Year award in 2018. From 2016-2018, she was the SEC Player of the Year, as well as a first-team All American for all three seasons. A'ja's impact on the court was undeniable, and her journey was far from over.

Professional Career and Achievements

​Following her remarkable collegiate career, A'ja Wilson set her sights on the professional realm. In 2018, she entered the WNBA Draft and was selected as the first overall pick by the Las Vegas Aces. Transitioning seamlessly into the professional ranks, A'ja made an immediate impact, displaying her scoring prowess, rebounding tenacity, and shot-blocking abilities. She was named Rookie of the Year in the WNBA in 2018. 

A'ja continued to improve and was named the WNBA's MVP in 2020 and 2022. In 2022, she led the Aces to the WNBA title, beating the Connecticut Sun. 

A'ja is currently playing on a two-year contract worth $398,422. She'll be eligible for the WNBA's Veteran Supermax contract in 2024, which is worth $234,936/season today. 

Throughout her professional career, A'ja Wilson has consistently raised the bar, earning multiple All-Star selections and securing numerous accolades. Her relentless work ethic and commitment to excellence have cemented her status as one of the premier players in the WNBA.

Off the Court

​Beyond her on-court achievements, A'ja Wilson is a beacon of inspiration and a catalyst for change. She actively uses her platform to advocate for social justice, women's empowerment, and equality. A'ja's impact extends far beyond basketball, as she serves as a role model for aspiring athletes and individuals striving to make a positive difference in society.

A'ja has been dating fellow professional basketball player, Josh Cunningham, who she met in high school. She also recently published a book called Dear Black Girls: How to be True to You.
